With an online business, you likely get lots of fame and attention using blogs, Twitter, and Facebook.

But when it comes to getting a national print magazine to pay attention to you, you get no love.

Whether you’ve tried desperately to get an editor feature your business with no luck, or you’ve cowered in the corner wishing you had the gall to actually contact one of these folks, I’m hear to tell you that you CAN make the leap into national magazines.

Here are 3 ways you can woo magazine editors so they’ll be whipping up a frenzy over you.

Stay in the Know

People and businesses that are featured in national magazines are trendsetters. They are totally “in the know” and suss out ways to use these national trends to develop angles to pitch the media.

What does this mean for you?

Keep up with what’s going on around you in the world. This could be the latest technology, the hottest color celebrities are sporting on the red carpet, or a brand spankin’ new health statistic that is knocking people off their rocker.

Simply put, get a feel for what is covered and how it’s covered so you’ll know how to fit in.

Create Nifty News

If you’ve got nothing going on, then you’re not newsworthy. Gulp.

So, what can you do?

Package your business into a neat little news story, tie it up with a pretty bow, and watch things snowball. This could be anything from forging a charity partnership, to creating your own study or survey, to designing some red-carpet worthy trend.

Become a Source

Magazine editors are always looking for good sources. If you have access to lots of good people or special things, maybe you can help. For example, a client of mine is a style expert and she regularly provides magazines with the latest trends and products – even if her name isn’t always mentioned. This helpful attitude spurns a lifetime of goodwill and has delivered plenty of big time coverage for her brand.
